Barry Sanders Heisman Portrait
Original oil on canvas artwork by famed sports artist and Oklahoma native Ted Watts from The Ted Watts Collection of Original Heisman Trophy Winner Portrait Paintings. Ted Watts' painted a portrait of every Heisman winner until 2007, each of them placed in the Heisman Gallery at the College Football Hall of Fame in South Bend, Indiana. When the HOF was moved to Atlanta in 2010, the collection was removed. Years later, I was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to purchase the Barry Sanders portrait.
Though Ted Watts was known for his work covering many sports, teams, and eras, I couldn't possibly describe his impact on OSU better than my good friend @casdas did upon Mr. Watts passing in 2015:
"Ted Watts' sports art is undeniably interwoven with Oklahoma State University athletics. Many remember the iconic football game program covers; the 1980-83 "Saturday Afternoon Pokes" series, inspired by the famous Saturday Evening Post magazine covers done by Norman Rockwell, and the "My Heroes Have Always Been Cowboys" covers of 1984 and 1985. There was a year of "OSU Cowboy Football" in 1986.
But there were countless other media guide covers, and schedule posters, and baseball and golf that I know of, and I would guess many other OSU sports and athletes that Ted Watts memorialized forever in his distinctive, instantly identifiable style.
The Watts artwork that was done for OSU is a tremendous collection of OSU memorabilia. It encompasses so many of the great OSU players...he painted OSU athletes for at least 20 years, and he went back in time to portray Cowboy and Aggie heroes of the past. His work is as timeless as that of Lon Keller, who drew so many of the vintage football and basketball program covers that were used by dozens of colleges nationwide in the 40s, 50s, and 60s. Many schools were able to use Keller's artwork, but far less were fortunate enough to have a collection of Ted Watts' work like OSU possesses."
